The “Streets of Fire” Skateboard Demonstration and Bike Rodeo was held Saturday October 1 on DeLa Mar Street. Over 500 people attended the event that highlighted the safety of skateboarding and bicycling. The Fairhope Police Bike Patrol was on site to help the younger bicyclist with safety demonstration and free Bike Helmets.

Reading Pod and Staircase

Federal Grant given to the city of Fairhope to build the South Beach trail, at Debbie’s urging, gave an additional grant to build the reading pod pictured below. The area was designed by Matt Walcott with Walcott, Adams & Verneuille Architects in Farihope. Teachers students and the public will be able to enjoy this elevated area for studies, stories and small music venues. In the same Federal Grant money was also secured to build a new staircase allowing access from the South end of the public beach to the Eastern Shore trail (along South Mobile Street)

South Beach Side Walk

The South Beach Trail in Fairhope was funded by Recreational Trails Program grant written by Debbie for the city. Approximately 80% of the $138,000 was spent on the multipurpose trail, along with a reading pod area for school children and small assemblies. The other 20% of the funding came from city “in-kind” services. The trail winds through a tree enhanced park with a small beach at its southern most end, that until now was inaccessible. Stairs have been built to connect the southern end of the trail up the beach head to the Eastern Shore Trail that runs through Fairhope to Weeks Bay Estuary to the south and the Battleship Uss. Alabama to the North.
